Is Île Flottante worth it?
Depends on the nightTechnically excellent, without one dish I kept thinking about
The ingredients are fresh, the technique is controlled and the service is polished. Where it fell short for me was flavour identity relative to the price. At $130 a head I expected a more distinct style, and I left having had a nice night without one dish I kept thinking about. Go for the calm room and precise cooking.

Good for
Anniversary
Ideal
Calm, intimate and well suited to a planned evening together.
Impressing a cook
Works, with a caveat
Safe pick for technique and polish. Someone hunting a standout dish may not find one.
Double date
Works, with a caveat
The room is quiet and the pacing is slow. Four people can work, but this is built for two.
First date
Not the one
A long tasting menu is a commitment. We sat at 5:30 and left at 8:00 eating at a normal pace, and that's a lot of evening before you know.
Casual midweek
Not the one
Nothing about $130 a head is casual.
Late night
Not the one
The room closes at 22:00 and the menu runs two and a half hours, so the last useful table is early evening.
The room
Intimate without being stiff. People come to eat and take their time. Lighting is flattering and the pacing is calm.
It works well for a quiet date. The trade-off is time, so budget the full evening.
Meet the chef
Sean Murray Smith · Chef and co-owner
Sean Murray Smith is chef and co-owner with Nada Abou Younes. The two of them ran Les Deux Singes de Montarvie in this space from 2011, built a real following, and by late 2016 decided it was time to change. When the unit next door came free they expanded, renovated and rebuilt the concept, name included.
The name is personal. Île flottante is Smith's favourite dessert, and it doubles as a nod to Montreal as an island. There's an Expo 67 thread in it too: his father worked there, and the name gestures at Île Sainte-Hélène. It's a restaurant identity rather than a menu description.

Tell them allergies and real dislikes when you book. It steers you away from a hard no and makes the whole flow feel more tailored.
On the food overall. Ingredients fresh and handled properly, technique controlled and confident, execution clean and consistent. Some combinations felt a little mismatched, and I never got that this-is-the-chef's-profile moment.
On dessert. The weakest part of my visit, which surprised me, because dessert is usually where a kitchen lands the final punch. They were good rather than a statement. One was corn-focused and the corn never actually showed up in a way that popped. The idea was stronger than the payoff, and because dessert is the last thing you remember the night ended flatter than I wanted.

My note on Île Flottante

The part that is just my opinion
The honest caveat: the technique and execution are excellent and the service is smooth, but for the price I expected at least one dish I'd describe as memorable. I had a really nice night. I didn't leave obsessed. At this level I'm looking for the plate that creates a memory, and the meal stayed in the very good lane.

How far ahead do I need to book?
Book ahead. A lot of tables were already named when we sat down, and if you have allergies it's the easiest way to sort them in advance.
Can they handle dietary restrictions?
